The trail is a legacy of the former local mining industry.

In 1874 the line was rebuilt by engineer John Barraclough Fell and converted to locomotive working, at which time the gauge was changed from 4 ft 6 in (1,372 mm) to 2 ft 6 in (762 mm). The Pentewan Railway closed in 1918.
